Camino Day 14 – Castrojeriz

Day 2 of the Meseta!

Another beautiful blue sky, as we climbed gently out of Hornillos and back up onto a glorious plateau of green fields and gentle rolling paths. In the clearer air of today, snow-capped mountains visible in the far distance to our right and slowly moving closer.

A quite lovely coffee / albergue randomly situated just outside the first and only midway town today, Hontanas, served as a great spot to sit and absorb some warmth from the morning sun on this chilly day. Hontanas itself was very interesting, with some old ruins on the way down into its small valley.

And otherwise, a day of pure countryside walking. By walk’s end our destination, Castrojeriz, came into view… a hill topped with a castle, the town arranged around the slopes of the hill and a major church at one end of town.

Fantastic location for our albergue, partway up the hill. And a really enjoyable time sitting outside the taverna / pub + restaurant eating a late lunch in the cool afternoon sunshine… overall, a really grand day.
