A bright and sunny day’s walking towards distant snow-touched montañas / mountains!
While the cities along the Camino provide excitement, facilities and cathedrals, the arriving into and leaving from those cities is typically an exercise in endurance. Lovely León proved no exception, with a tiny trudge to start the day, but suburban traffic-soaked streets passed away soon enough for greener pastures – literally – and more interesting walking.
A few small towns again, one for coffee and one for lunch, and across a day that climbed steadily from cool to start into summery heat by the early afternoon. Clear skies the entire time. And a landscape singing out with spring growth at every turn. And for the last stretch of road walking, new mountains visible almost directly ahead of us, looming hazily in the far distance with snow-tinged peaks. From Astorga we climb back into a mountain pass, the highest points of the entire Camino… are those peaks that same chain?
Another great little albergue tonight, complete with a pool out the back, tho still closed at this time of year. It got warm enough to have a swim and was north of twenty degrees – quite warm for walking the unshaded bits of path.
Stats for today:
- 24.7km
- 223m ascent
- 207m descent
- 3 weeks of walking now under our belts!
